Council for Innovation & Creativity

The Council for Innovation & Creativity is responsible for identifying, promoting, and expanding innovative and creative practices/processes in music education. This may occur by encouraging teachers and students to engage in musical improvisation and composition within their respective programs, as well as communicate with membership about best practices, new resources, and opportunities. The council will identify leaders in the field to share their research and ideas through a variety of avenues, including sessions at the VMEA Professional Development Conference. This group will also oversee the annual VMEA Composition Festival, including promoting composition submissions, communicating information about the festival, securing evaluators, and organizing the performance of these compositions at conference. The Council Chair will write three articles each academic year to be published in NOTES, providing new, innovative ideas and approaches that teachers can use in their classroom. Three sessions are presented at VMEA Professional Development conference to be hands-on learning and activities that can be implemented and/or adapted for all classroom educators.

Council for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The Council for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is responsible for addressing diversity and equity within the organization. DEI Council members represent a cross-section of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, culture, and geographic location from across the Commonwealth. The Council identifies barriers confronted in music education with a focus on culturally responsive pedagogy, special learners, and intersectionality. The Council provides professional development opportunities, best practices, and policy recommendations for inclusive practices. The Council Chair will write three articles each academic year to be published in NOTES, providing strategies and ideas for inclusive practices that teachers can use in their classroom. Three sessions will be selected for VMEA Professional Development conference to further the understanding of inclusive and culturally responsive teaching practices.
